Orchid Territory, oil on canvas, 40″ x 20″
Born in Montreal in 1976, he received a BFA from Concordia University’s Studio Arts program (2002), and a diploma in Computer Animation from Sheridan College (2003). Since then, he has been making visual effects for film and television, and he has also produced computer generated projections for live theater. He resumed his neglected painting practice in 2010.
These works are guided by the mandate “accuracy without precision”. Oil paint and pastels are applied in loose, ballistic motions, allowing a cohesive image to emerge from random seeming marks. The resulting paintings are naturalistic portraits, which retain an abstract quality that flaunts the mediums’ physical properties. This tension between the medium and the image is inspired by the traditions of impressionism and modernism in general.
